How do you pose without posing? How do you get a child to stay where you put them? Well, unless they are too young to move on their own…you don’t!
Let’s be honest. It is hard for adults to sit and follow directions for an hour, so why would we expect kids to…then add a happy face into the mix and oh geez. So, how do we do it???
Well in stages.
First: we do the “formal” pictures. The classic everyone look at the camera and smile pictures while everyone is on their bestest behavior and still into the whole photo shoot thing. We do a variety of poses. The whole family, just the kids, mom and the kids, dad and the kids, sets of siblings, then each kid by themselves. Gotta keep them moving!!
Second: we give everyone a chance to relax. While we are taking the kids individual pictures the other kids have a chance to relax, play with toys, have a snack or run around for a minute.
Third: Then after corralling everyone back together we do the “natural” pictures. We go through the order again, but this time we have a little fun. We arrange them in a way that the family interacts with each other…Have a kid sit on dad’s shoulders, everyone hug mom or sitting together so some of the kids are leaning against mom and dad. Then give them something to do… tickle the youngest/oldest, have a kid tell a joke or whisper a secret, have dad pretend to throw a child, kids race towards the camera, walk away from the camera holding hands. All these activities engage the kids the family as a group and provide natural expressions. The real family stories! No more cheese faces!
You know what?? The pictures that my clients enjoy most are in that last set of pictures where the kids are interacting and laughing or smiling for real! Now you know my secrets! Haha That is pretty much how a photo shoot goes!
